Transform Your Dated Armchair to Modern Day Fabulous

When my customer came to me with a request to give her ‘marketplace find’ a more modern look, I was on it – like a bonnet – as they say. Armchair upholstery is one of my favourite things. The older (and/or more interesting) the better. This Lincoln House chair dates back to the mid-1990s. When chintz was king! Or queen. We loved it, didn’t we? From three-piece suites to curtains, cushions to bedding, we were nuts about a bit of cotton based block pattern. Chintz actually originated from India in the 16th century. Its history1 is quite fascinating. I guess that’s why we fell in love with it again in…

I Have Fallen In Love with Painting Pianos

“Do you paint pianos?”. That was how my first commission came about. I cannot lie – it terrified me. But now, with several more years experience, painting pianos is becoming my new favourite thing. Before you throw your hands up in disbelief, hear me out. You see, I don’t just go ahead, all gung ho and think of the bank account. I still love old furniture in its original form. In fact, my own home sports more original pieces than painted. I can see him nodding, in a kind of Joey Tribbiani sort of way. I am going to be honest and say I probably paid too much for this fella. With the benefit of hindsight, I realised he would cost a lot to bring back to a standard someone would be proud to use – and not simply look at. But he had me fooled He had super Hepplewhite handles. And evidence of some…

  • Bureau Cameo By Sklan

You had me at “she loves writing”

“Mum” entrusted this vintage bureau to the Artisan Bothy, to makeover for her little girl. The bureau is a period style piece with a “Cameo by Sklan” mark inside the drawer. Now some of you will know I love a bit of research. It is fab to be able to hand a piece over, with a little more about its provenance. It took some digging but I was able to establish this dates back to around 1960. So almost an antique in the style of an even older antique – if that makes sense. When “Mum” lifted the garage door, I drew breath. This is gorgeous. I actually felt guilty…
