Welcome to The Artisan Bothy! The home of bespoke painted furniture in Moray, in North East Scotland.

The thing about furniture is, fashions change. Indeed, it has been the case – for centuries – well, forever, really. Imagine the ornamental opulence of the Elizabethan and Jacobean eras. Travel through the Georgian and Victorian ages, to 20th century Art Deco and beyond. From time immemorial we have seen the look, style, colour and composition of our furniture shift.

Lately, we have seen solid furniture sidelined in favour of flat pack and budget “big shed” pieces. And then choosing to simply throw it away when we get bored or need a new colour scheme. Now that goes against everything we are trying to do to help our planet.

Imagine the Possibilities

So imagine if you could keep the solid reliability associated with the pieces of old. Yet change them every time you want to update a room to the latest fashion trends.

Well, guess what? Now you can. Thanks to the recent surge in manufacturers of chalk, mineral and acrylic paints, formulated specially for furniture. Applied with love and care – and a little elbow grease by a professional.

And what’s more, I aim to choose products that are low and zero VOC. And that’s so much better for the environment and for your ‘home health’ too.

The Artisan Bothy…

Meet Marie – the owner, creative painter and all round furniture lover, at the Artisan Bothy!

“I simply love working with old solid pieces of furniture. Whether it’s a Victorian chest, an Art Deco wardrobe, a Stag Minstrel dresser or a couple of pine bedside cabinets. Because let’s face it, we all deserve a little TLC.

“Be it paint or wax or a bit of both, I just enjoy bringing a piece of discarded furniture back to life.”

“It is immensely satisfying to see a dusty item pulled out of the back of a garage or off the trailer, destined for landfill. And yo then give it give a new look and centre stage in someone’s home”

You will find Artisan Bothy in Glenlivet, the heart of Speyside’s whisky country, on the edge of the Cairngorm National Park. Here I upcycle, repurpose and restore furniture for sale. Commissions are also undertaken. Contact Marie for details.
